Child characters in fantasy roleplays?

There's something that has been on my mind for a long time now. I have alot of childern characters that I roleplay with, and I cant help but notice, that alot of characters, somehow have a 'soft-spot' for childern. Having a character with a soft-spot for childern isnt exactly a problem, but it actually starts to somewhat annoy me now. Of coarse, it makes sense for characters to possibly care of look out for a child one, and I dont blame characters for doing that, but it becomes a problem when EVERY character does that. It also somewhat irritates me when I see a sadistic and murderous character, basicly acting like a childs mother. At first such things didnt really bother me, but I now find it more cliche then anything else. It seems like child characters can do about anything they desire, which is rather strange. In most fantasy RP's you wouldnt expect childern to basicly run up to a Demon and just be petted by it.

There is a counter-argument to this however. A very good reason why most people choose to treat child characters this way, is because there isnt alot of choice. If you go into a place with a child character and there's some kind of murderous monster or person then the chance of them killing or harming your character is high. This doesnt happen alot though, to the point that actually getting a child character into a risky position, becomes difficult. The reason that most characters dont attack or harm child characters is logical though. Most of the time, childern are seen as innocent and harmless. In some roleplays, this is completely the other way around, which results in most childern being seen as possible monsters or such. Esspecially when they come into dangerous places. There is the possibility of people just being relieved that there's a normal child or the fact that they are so harmless and innocent. Eventhough this is a major reason why to like 'normal' childern in fantasy Roleplays and such, it still doesnt mean that everyone should. Childern are still childern. They have their positives and negatives.

My question is, what do you think about the whole thing?

Is this a problem, or simply something that isnt even worth mentioning?
